One of my current self-sufficiency projects is to build a Kenyan top bar hive. This style of apiculture is better for the bees, the beekeeper and, as a bonus, you get thousands more pollenating insects flying around your garden and giving you more fruit and veg in the process. Then there is the honey, beeswax and propolis you get to share with the bees.
These horizontal hives are often built with scrap wood and many are built for pennies so you do not have to spend loads initially. It would be nice for me to be able to eventually move away from all refined sugar and replace with honey.......that is the plan anyway. The video below is from Australia but people keep these hives all over the planet including colder areas like Scandinavia, Nebraska etc also.
