Incense & Meditation

Post by Liberalis »

I struggle to meditate without the use of incense. It may be a more important part of process than the style of meditation for me.

I have always used incense but it is only since starting meditation that i have really got into incense on a deeper level. I used to use incense cones and sticks and then found out about some of the nasty ingredients often used in many brands and i had to rethink things. I then started making my own incense cones which was better but it really is an art form and was hit and miss for me to make nice smelling cones that also burnt well. I also found quite often that the incense smoke would make me sneeze during meditation which broke the concentration (or lack of concentration).

Earlier this year, i got hold of a ceramic electric incense burner and it has been a game changer for me. Many of them have timers and you can adjust the temperature according to what type of incense you are burning. There is very little smoke, no burnt incense smell and you get a pure scent. I mix and match incense resins and turn the burner on 15 minutes before i meditate. No sneezing, no smoke and my meditation has gone to another level.

Frankincense especially lets me go deeper and have found out that there is evidence out there that it has psychoactive effects so that may be a factor ;) . Maybe that explains why it has been used for thousands of years in spiritual settings. https://www.ancient-origins.net/news-sc ... ria-004585

For anyone else who has an obsession with incense and use it as an essential part of their meditation routines, post to this topic and let us know your favourite incense brands and/or incense resins etc.

Thanks for the post Liberalis,

I’m a big fan of incense, I burn it while I’m being active, cleaning the home or working on a project. I like how scent can change the space immediately, encourages me to focus on getting things done. One of my favourite aroma is Sandalwood, favourite brand at the moment is tribeearth.com.au, handmade locally in my area.

We commonly use palo santo (holy stick) here in Peru for meditations and cleansing (especially before medicine ceremonies). Buying big hunks of the wood in the market and splintering it down into small sticks to burn.

There are some regulations on sale and export but it's such an incredible smell that the Satya Nag Champa has stayed in its box for so long it might not be good anymore.

I have got some Palo Santo and I haven't used it yet. I will try it tomorrow as I haven't smelt any before.

Some of my cactus are from Peru(vianus) ;)

Great, let me know how it compares to the frankincense.

This is probably the wrong thread, but San Pedro, Huachuma, Peruvian Torch, Echinopsis peruviana is a friend here and I've been studying the ethnobotanical effects for a few years and understanding more about the medicine. More recently preparing the medicine and taking people into the mountains here. I hope you've been lucky with cactus growth and can connect to the energy of the plant even if it's just through meditation!

I have 2 pachanoi, 4 bridgesii and 4 Peruvian torch. One of them is ready soon and will be first time working with them. Heard good things about the spirit of the cactus.

Los hongos are my normal sacrament.

I just used some palo santo for the first time while meditating and wow, thats a special incense! Nothing like i expected but better. The first thing that hit me was a menthol scent and then all these exotic and complex aromas. It is a lovely, clean scent.
That is going into my top 5 incenses straight away. I have a bag of it which will last me quite a while and will be buying more.

Goes great with (-,-)

Is it only in Australia or worldwide it is getting harder to find true frankincense?

It used to be easy but the past 5 years it has disappeared off the "shelf" replaced with another type that is written different like "frank sense" or something like that.

I can get it by mail order but not in shops anymore.

I know what you mean, i get mine online, try to source it direct from small businesses. I have actually got some decent stuff from a good supplier on Aliexpress in the past but is a gamble if it is genuine and now, if it will ever reach you.

There are a few books out there (available on some torrent sites etc  ) that are about finding substitute incense ingredients in your own area. Quite cool. Collecting resins from fruit trees like peach, pine trees etc and various local aromatic herbs. Another thing you can become quite self-sufficient with if incense is your thing.

I used to use a lot of incense and it does help to set the right mental mood. I hardly use it now as it had an effect on my wifes asthma. Sometimes I burn just a tiny amount to give a bit of scent
