Saving the best for last: The legendary ski race "Der Weisse Rausch" in St. Anton am Arlberg

When the lifts close on April 23rd in the afternoon, things really get going in the ski area of St. Anton am Arlberg. It's the day of the "white intoxication" - the cult ski race that pushes its participants to their sporting limits every year. Even during the day there is a crackling atmosphere in the air: a striking number of skiers wear racing suits and cover up their increasing nervousness with jokes in the gondola or with deliberately casual faces. At 5 p.m. it gets serious: That's when 555 skiers, snowboarders or telemarkers set off for the mass start at the Vallugagrat.

The now legendary alpine ski race "Der Weisse Rausch" attracts thousands of winter sports enthusiasts from all over the world to St. Anton am Arlberg every year. In principle, anyone can take part, but some people know from experience: This race is not for everyone. Already the right position at the mass start brings decisive seconds later. However, the real challenge follows shortly afterwards on the "Schmerzensberg": Whoever rushes up the 150-meter-long intermediate ascent too quickly will burn their lungs. If you take it too easy, you will fall behind. The unprepared slope also requires skiing skills and dexterity. The record time over the entire route was set by Mathias Gorbach in 2017 with seven minutes and nine seconds. Since then it has been important to crack them. Eleven to 18 minutes, on the other hand, is a good average. Towards the end of the race, however, that often plays a subordinate role - because then all that's left is: the main thing is to get to the finish line. By the way, spectators can observe some garishly dressed participants, who only calmly arrive after half an hour. At that point, at the latest, it becomes clear that the fun doesn't stop in this race.
