Has anybody set up a DIY solar system?

Post by BananaMulcher »

I am very interested in solar energy for its independence, but want to avoid doing anything through contractors who invariably keep you tied to the grid. You just need an inverter kit, some car batteries and cheap panels? How does one mount this to rooftops?

i havent my self put up any "yet" but here is some ideas maybe. it all depends on what you can fix it to (wood metal) how you roof is made or even free space in your garden.
1st picture is a azimuth it can track the sun or what you want it to track pretty expensive, but a DIY version is not that hard to make. and a solar tracker DIY will work on its own power collected from the solar panel. :) all solar panels need firm fastening since at high wind speeds they will act as a sail due to their surface area, another option is a small windmill, standard windmil this one is following the wind by direction,or a vawt (vertical windmill) if there is no sun but a lot of wind blowing it will be the collector instead.3rd option as a collector of power is water if it something you have nearby free of use, small stream/river.
rest of pictures are just some roof attachments

people ask your self " what does it it cost to live on earth" then putt seeds in your left hand you can live from, and money/gold/silver in your right hand.
Now go plant them both, and then see Which one will give you something you can eat.

The price of efficient solar cells and panels is dropping now due to advancements in manufacturing techniques so it is becoming less expensive but still pricey. I have looked into this a few times recently and will when i can afford it.

Thanks, I think that simplicity is the best design when talking about any technology. I kind of wish that Max had done a video on solar since one of his structures appears to have an installation.

We have here a backward meter so bats on the solar panels is not of use bc is +- the same if we had a batt pack. So I just bought a Mobile battery pack with solar panels. Is 3000watt and the panels are 600w so in 5-7 hours it is charged and is very mobile. They say they will make also a 5KwH (5000watt) end of year https://www.mobisun.com/nl/portable-sol ... h-mobisun/ (and also they take crypto)

I have been setting one up at home. I find the mobile units very expensive although so handy. I have used 2 x lead acid batteries due to add another 2 shortly = 470amp hours. I have 600w of flexible solar panels ie can easily take one with me in van camping. I have an inverter of 3500watts which takes a peak up to 6000watts. I'm currently drilling holes in floor.through ceiling and walls where I'm running 12v circuits and I have a marine 12v fuse/consumer unit to run the circuits through. It's very enjoyable doing this and.getting free electricity. I'm in Scotland, UK..not exactly known for being sunny...lol but it's working alright.
