Comet watch

Post by MrRecycle »

"Funeral for a Friend"
D/2019 Y4 ATLAS on May 18th, this concludes my observations of this amazing opportunity to watch a comet die. The sky wasn't even dark and the object was on the treeline, plus it obviously has died. Fragment B appears to be destroyed, there is no nuclear activity seen. Just a elongated haze with scattered debris. Estimated mag was +9.5-10,

I'm surprised at the shape however, elongated but arched over some to the left side. All my previous observations had a pretty straight elongated debris trail. Here, obviously it's not the case.

Celestron Omni CG-4 equatorial mount
Nikon D3200 DSLR camera.

2 exposures, one at 30 seconds and another at 15 seconds. Low altitude, only 5° up.
