how about when they have encircled the earth, the thing expands 10% and zooms off into space.
or the earth is disappeared and only the One Ring to House Them All remains.

yeah, sort of something like that. Like trying to do something with the leylines or something, but on planetary scale. Or just splitting the globe (if the planet is a globe) in 2 like germany after ww2.
