First Encounter with alien Tripods

Based on H.G. Wells' 1898 novel, "The War of the Worlds", an alien invasion threatens the future of humanity. The catastrophic nightmare is depicted through the eyes of one American family fighting for survival. With Tom Cruise as Ray Ferrier.

"To Babylon you must go and there you will be rescued; there God will ransom you out of the power of your enemies." (Micah 4:10)

Quatermass and the Pit (1967, Roy Ward Baker)

Post by Robo »

Quatermass and the Pit
The storyline centres on the discovery of a mysterious object buried at the site of an extension to the London Underground. Also uncovered nearby are the remains of early human ancestors more than five million years old. Realising that the object is in fact an ancient Martian spacecraft, Professor Bernard Quatermass deduces that the aliens have influenced human evolution and the development of human intelligence. The spacecraft has an intelligence of its own, and once uncovered begins to exert a malign influence, resurrecting Martian memories and instincts buried deep within the human psyche.

Mark Kermode reviews Quatermass and the Pit:

"To Babylon you must go and there you will be rescued; there God will ransom you out of the power of your enemies." (Micah 4:10)

Dorian Gray (2009, Oliver Parker)

Dorian Gray

Dorian sees his portrait
A naïve young man. A lovelorn artist. A corruptible Lord. A deal with the Devil. It all paints a dark picture of a Victorian London and how the rich and infamous party at their peril. Here, the telling of time and its consequence of experience for life's treasures' takes its toll on the body, mind and soul. The haunting and bleak tale of power, greed, vanity and inevitable self-destruction is ever present amongst the deceit, opium dens and sin."

I'm still learning from films, drama, literature and folk tales. Learning never stops!

If the reality is that the world is controlled by dark forces, then it's better that we know rather than to be kept in the dark, and one of the best ways to explore these dark subjects is through art, which of course, the powers that be are trying to dumb down, which is one reason why good art is becoming more rare. Some art promotes the Babylon system, but even that kind of art can be helpful for our understanding, hence "To Babylon you must go and there you will be rescued; there God will ransom you out of the power of your enemies."
